Moose permit application and wait rules

Beginning January 1, 2026, you may apply for a moose permit if you can get a Maine hunting license now or by opening day. If you already got a moose permit, you cannot get another until the 4th calendar year after your last permit. This waiting rule does not apply if you were a listed subpermittee or you gave or received a permit through the disabled‑veteran transfer. Children under 10 on opening day may apply and earn points, but they cannot receive a permit.

Transfer moose permits to disabled veterans

Beginning January 1, 2026, a moose permit holder can give their permit to a disabled veteran. The veteran must meet Maine’s permit and veteran eligibility rules and be allowed to hold a permit. The commissioner can approve a direct transfer to a veteran named by the holder. Or the holder can return the permit and the department will transfer it to a disabled veteran by rule. Both the giver and the veteran lose any accumulated points and are then ineligible for three years.
