Higher pay for quality child care providers

Maine pays higher subsidy rates to child care programs that meet, or make strong progress toward, national quality standards when federal law allows. The department uses a rating system with at least three steps, and rates rise at each step. Programs accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the American Montessori Society, the National Association for Family Child Care, or the Council on Accreditation, and Head Start programs that meet national standards, get the top rating and top add-on. The state uses federal Child Care and Development Fund 25% quality set‑aside dollars or other allowed federal funding for these payments.

No quality add-on for TANF child care

For child care paid through the TANF block grant, Maine does not have to pay a quality add-on. Providers serving TANF-funded slots are not guaranteed the extra quality payment. Families using TANF-funded care may see fewer incentives tied to program quality for those slots.
