April 30 renewals for aquaculture, green crab
The commercial green crab only license now expires on April 30 each year. The aquaculture license now expires on April 30 each year. Plan renewals for that date.
New rules for green crab dealers
The law creates a green crab wholesale dealer license to buy, sell, process, ship, or transport green crabs from Maine harvesters. You must hold this new license or a wholesale seafood license to do those wholesale activities. "Green crab" means the species Carcinus maenas. The license costs $50 each year, expires March 31, and covers only one place or one vehicle. If you buy directly from a harvester, you may only buy from harvesters with the required license, and you may ask to see it. Doing these activities without the right license can bring penalties, and the department may suspend or revoke a license. The $50 fee goes to the Green Crab Management Fund.
License ends in 2031 after review
The green crab wholesale dealer license is repealed on January 1, 2031. Before then, the Department of Marine Resources must review the program and report to the Legislature in 2030 with advice to keep, change, or end it. Until repeal, dealers must follow the licensing rules.
