The Secretary of State runs an application to pay members with lived experience when money is available. The process uses a standard form, tells applicants the decision, and sets who gets paid first. Awards are made only when the Legislature provides funding. The law adds a one‑time $5,000 fund for fiscal year 2025‑26. The process pauses when no funding is available.
Beginning October 1, 2025, if you are named in law as a member with lived experience on a listed state advisory board, you can be paid for your time up to the legislative per diem. You must have first‑hand experience tied to the board’s work and not be paid by your employer for this service. You can also be reimbursed for meeting meals, child care, and travel. Payment happens only if the department that runs the board has enough budget money. If not, you or the board can apply through the Secretary of State’s process.
State law sets one pay option for every board: a legislative per diem, another daily rate, a salary, expenses only, or no pay. When pay is allowed, members can also be reimbursed for expenses under standard state rules. If a board is marked “expenses only,” members can claim expenses but no pay. If a board is marked “not authorized,” members cannot receive pay or expenses unless another law allows it. For advisory or minimal‑authority boards, pay for time and any expense payments may not be more than the legislative per diem.
