Harbor master vehicles get lights, sirens, and training rules
Beginning June 9, 2025, municipal vehicles driven by appointed harbor masters or deputies are authorized emergency vehicles. A town may allow a siren and specific red or red-and-white flashing lights: either one in the front (windshield or dashboard) or two on the front, plus one red light in the rear window area. Lights and any siren may be used only while responding to a watercraft emergency, and a windshield or dashboard light must be shielded. The town can revoke permission at any time. To use emergency privileges, the operator must complete the Maine Department of Public Safety emergency vehicle course.
