The law tightens teacher certification at public charter schools. Until July 31, 2026, full-time teachers must hold a certificate or get one within 3 years of their hire date. During this period, teachers with an advanced degree, a professional certification, or unique subject expertise are exempt. Beginning August 1, 2026, every full-time charter teacher must already hold an appropriate teaching certificate.
The commissioner can reissue an educational technician certificate to a retiree whose certificate was active and in good standing right before they began retirement and has since lapsed. You must be receiving a benefit from the State Employee and Teacher Retirement Program. Until July 31, 2026, you qualify only if you started retirement pay within the last 5 years. Beginning August 1, 2026, the limit drops to 3 years. The reissued certificate lasts the same length and follows the same renewal rules as a standard certificate.
