Free registration and excise tax break for disabled veterans
The law gives veterans with a permanent 100% service‑connected disability free vehicle registration and "Disabled Veteran" plates. Each covered vehicle must have a registered gross weight of 26,000 pounds or less. You can also get a disability placard at no fee. The state may issue free registration and plates for up to 3 vehicles you own. You must show VA or military proof of 100% service‑connected disability and proof you paid the excise tax or that your car is excise‑tax exempt. Up to 3 automobiles you own are exempt from the motor vehicle excise tax if you are granted free registration under this law or you receive federal compensation for total, service‑connected disability. Your name must be on the car title; for joint titles, at least one named owner must qualify.
