Student loan help for priority jobs

Some student borrowers can get help repaying loans. You must have a degree or credential earned in the last 5 years and have eligible student loans. You must work in Maine in a priority occupation for at least 4 years. Before each payment, you and your employer must certify you worked in that job for the past 12 months. Payments are up to $25,000 per year, for up to 4 years. Your total cannot be more than $100,000 or 50% of your eligible loan balance at application, whichever is less. Priority occupations are set by the Finance Authority using state workforce needs.

Maine workforce program and fund launched

The law creates the Maine Credentialed Workforce Program and a nonlapsing fund inside the Finance Authority. The fund can hold state, federal, and private money. Investment earnings and unused money stay in the fund for this program, and federal funds follow federal rules. The Authority can also use fund dollars to pay program administration costs. The Authority must publish the list of priority jobs and the application dates and deadlines each cycle. The Authority can adopt routine rules to run the program. The budget provides $500 in 2025–26 and $500 in 2026–27 to authorize spending from the fund.
