New police rules for searches, privacy, and trafficking victims
The law requires all Maine law enforcement agencies to update their written policies. Policies must cover unannounced search warrant entries and explain when officers may enter without warning. Agencies must protect attorney-client communications, with steps to keep talks private and steps after any breach. Agencies must meet this confidentiality requirement by January 1, 2024. Policies must guide how officers identify and work with people believed to be sex trafficking victims.
