Education reports due in 2026–2027

By February 1, 2026, the Department submits an interim report on activities, progress, and initial findings to the Joint Standing Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs. The committee may file a bill to the Second Regular Session of the 132nd Legislature. By February 1, 2027, the Department submits a final report with findings for each review area and any recommended revisions to the Maine Learning Results, including amendments to law. If changes are recommended, the final report includes a detailed plan and proposed timeline. The committee may file a bill to the 133rd Legislature in 2027.

Working group to review school standards

The law requires the Maine Department of Education to form a working group to study the Maine Learning Results, the state’s K-12 standards. Members include classroom educators for covered grades and subjects, experts from Maine’s cultures and communities, and a statewide curriculum leaders’ representative. The group reviews purpose and results, structure and access, and how the format supports coherent, cross-subject learning. It checks cultural inclusion and accuracy across all content areas, including Wabanaki, African American, and Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander studies. The group must deliver findings and recommendations, including any suggested legislation to support implementation.
