Training required before corrections use of force

The law requires corrections officers and supervisors to finish in‑service training before they can use or direct nondeadly or deadly force. Training happens in the setting where force may be used and must follow board rules. Extra training is required for staff who move people under a court order or after an arrest, including force used outside a facility and directing a private person to use force. Without this training, they are not legally justified to use or direct those types of force. Agencies may provide the training themselves or use the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.
