Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 1 mixed.

Stricter rules to get osteopathic license

Beginning June 9, 2025, you must meet stricter standards to get a Maine osteopathic physician license. You must graduate from an osteopathic school accredited by the American Osteopathic Association’s Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation. You must pass each part of the COMLEX-USA or another exam the board approves. If you graduate before January 1, 2026, you need at least 12 months of accredited training; on or after January 1, 2026, you need at least 36 months. The board licenses you only if you are qualified and there is no cause for discipline under section 2591-A.

No specialty board mandate, more license options

The board cannot require specialty board certification or maintenance of certification to get or renew a license. The board may issue limited licenses, like for administrative medicine, by rule. These changes apply beginning June 9, 2025.

Osteopathic license application fee up to $600

When you apply, you pay a nonrefundable board fee up to $600, plus separate exam costs. You pay at the time of application or when you ask the board to act. This applies beginning June 9, 2025.

Temporary hospital license for residents and fellows

If you finished an AOA‑approved osteopathic school and are a fellow, intern, or resident in a Maine hospital, you get a temporary license. It lets you practice only under hospital control. No exam is required. Each term lasts up to one year and renewals can total up to five years. The fee cannot exceed $450. Effective June 9, 2025.
