Police officer policy training and yearly checks

Police agencies train officers on the agency’s policies and procedures. Training covers the same policies the agency publishes. By January 1 each year, the chief certifies to the board that the agency follows the training and posting rules. These duties apply beginning January 11, 2026.

Police policies online and paper copies may cost

By January 1, 2026, each police agency publishes its policies in clear language. The posting includes summaries of key policies, a full list of rules with updates, and contact info. The materials are clearly labeled as policies and show the publication date. Agencies post them on a public website you can download without a password or fee, or offer printed copies at headquarters. If you ask for a paper copy, you get it within 7 business days or the agency tells you when it will be ready. Agencies do not share records that are confidential under Title 16, section 804. For paper copies, they may charge a reasonable fee under Title 1, section 408-A. These access rules apply beginning January 11, 2026.
