State expands advocacy for serious mental illness
The state Department must contract with and seek funding for the state-designated protection and advocacy agency. The agency protects the rights of people with serious mental illness in hospitals and in the community. Services are offered statewide with a presence in at least five different areas. When needed to help a person who is hospitalized in a state mental health institute, the agency can review that person’s medical records to provide advocacy.
Advocates cannot give medical advice
Advocates who work under this law cannot give medical advice. They can help you understand your rights and speak up, but they do not offer treatment guidance. This protects people from non-medical advice but may limit some informal help.
