Stronger fair housing and lending protections
Maine law makes fair housing a civil right. You can get housing based on your ability to pay, without discrimination for listed traits or because you sought or received a protection order. Owners, landlords, and managers cannot ask about those traits, refuse to show or rent, post biased ads, charge different prices or terms, or evict for those reasons. Brokers and agents cannot steer you, misstate price or availability, or take listings when the owner plans to discriminate or there is a known pattern of discrimination. Lenders cannot ask about or use those traits when making or pricing home loans or other housing credit. These protections also cover people who asserted rights under former Title 39 or Title 39‑A and under Maine labor protections.
Fair hiring rules, limited apprenticeship age cap
The law bans employers, employment agencies, and unions from discrimination in hiring, pay, promotion, referrals, membership, and apprenticeships. They cannot act against you because of race or color; sex; sexual orientation or gender identity; disability; religion; age; ancestry; national origin; or familial status. They also cannot punish you because you asserted rights under Maine workers’ compensation or labor laws, or because you sought or received a protection order (including similar orders from other states or nations). They may not ask about or keep records of those traits before hiring, or run ads that express such preferences. Privileged medical exam records are allowed only when a required exam is given and handled as the law requires. You are protected from retaliation for reporting or helping with a case. A maximum age for an apprenticeship is allowed only if the Maine Human Rights Commission approves and the employer or union proves it ties to a reasonable return on training.
