Protection orders for image sharing and threats
The law adds sharing private sexual images, and threats to share them, to the acts that qualify for a protection order in family court. Victims can ask for a court order for protection under Maine’s domestic relations law. A threat counts when the person ignores a substantial risk that the target will reasonably fear the crime will be carried out.
Sharing or faking intimate images is a crime
The law makes it a crime to share, show, or post someone’s private sexual image to harass, threaten, or torment. It covers real pictures and AI-generated or edited images that look sexual or nude. It applies only if the person is identifiable, did not consent, and there is no public or newsworthy reason. “Image” includes photos, videos, livestreams, animations, computer files, and other visual media.
Threats to leak images are harassment
The law treats threats to share someone’s private sexual images as harassment. This applies when the person making the threat ignores a substantial risk that their words will make the target reasonably fear it will happen. You can seek help under Maine’s harassment law.
