Plan for student-led court help
The model must give people clear guidance on court steps and procedures. It must refer people to mental health and substance use care, and to housing, jobs, transportation, and food help. It must be run largely by social work and law students who can earn academic credit. The task force must consult advocates for unhoused people, survivors of domestic violence, survivors of sexual assault, and other groups who may benefit.
Task force to plan court help
The University of Maine System must convene a task force to plan a court navigation program. The task force includes at least one member from social work schools, the law school, Maine Pretrial Services, Pine Tree Legal Assistance, Disability Rights Maine, NAMI Maine, 211 Maine, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the judicial branch. The task force studies court navigation programs nationwide. It recommends a model for Maine and writes a plan to put it in place.
