2 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.
County tax timing and taxpayer protections
County commissioners set when towns must pay the county tax. The date cannot be earlier than September 1 of the following year. Commissioners must issue the county tax warrant by July 15 before that date. Assessors then add the county tax to regular property tax bills for that tax year. If the warrant is late and a supplemental assessment is needed, the county pays those costs, and towns can offset them against county tax owed.
County tax share and late-pay interest
Counties apportion the county tax using the latest state valuation. They may add up to 2% to cover fractional splits, but only with a recorded, proven need. If you pay late, the county can collect and charge interest under state law. This can raise what your town owes and, in turn, your property tax share.
