Portland-Auburn rail bed becomes interim trail

The law directs Maine DOT to remove state-owned, inactive track on the Berlin Subdivision and build a temporary bike and walking trail. The corridor runs from just north of the Back Cove swing bridge in Portland, near mile 1.7, to mile 26.5 in Auburn. The trail goes on the existing rail bed and can be paved, gravel, or stone dust. Work happens only after funding is available, permits are approved, and towns along the route sign agreements. This expands safe non-motor travel and recreation along the corridor. The law does not provide money or set a start date.
