Excise tax waived for qualifying veterans’ cars
Beginning July 1, 2026, Maine waives the motor vehicle excise tax for qualifying veterans. Up to three cars you own are exempt if you have free veteran vehicle registration from the state or you are totally service-connected disabled and get U.S. pension or compensation. Up to three cars you lease are also exempt if you are totally service-connected disabled and get that U.S. pension or compensation. Your name must be on the car title for owned vehicles or on the lease for leased vehicles. If there are multiple owners or lessees, at least one listed person must meet these veteran rules.
