Commission to fight deed and rental fraud
The law creates a 13-member commission to recommend ways to prevent deed fraud in Maine. Five are appointed by the Senate President: two senators (one from each of the two largest parties), a Maine register of deeds, a Maine title attorney, and a civil legal aid rep for older residents. Five are appointed by the House Speaker: two representatives (one from each of the two largest parties), a Maine State Police computer crimes unit rep, a statewide real estate brokers rep, and a banking institutions rep. The chair of the Real Estate Commission, the Secretary of State, and the Attorney General, or their designees, also serve. The commission studies fake rental listings and how deed fraud happens online, including use of artificial intelligence. The law sets membership and duties; it does not give enforcement powers, funding, or deadlines in the text provided.
