Potato quarantine rules set for update
By May 31, 2026, the Department must start updating Rule Chapter 30 (Potato Quarantine). The update must match state law and use current science on potato diseases and insects. The Department keeps working with Maine’s potato industry to prevent pests. By February 2, 2027, it must report to lawmakers on seed potato certification, import and testing rules, and quarantines. Lawmakers may act on the report.
Colorado seed potatoes banned in Maine
Effective now, Maine bans imports of seed potatoes from Colorado. Importers cannot bring Colorado seed potatoes into the state. The ban stays until the state finally adopts an updated Potato Quarantine rule (Rule Chapter 30). The goal is to stop harmful pests and protect crop health, yields, and markets.
