Vessel rules and breakdown relief for halibut fishers
Effective May 9, 2025, Maine sets clear vessel rules for commercial halibut licenses. You may catch, keep, move, or sell halibut only from the vessel named on your license. Crew can handle halibut only if the license lists crew. If that vessel is temporarily inoperable from an accident or mechanical failure, you can ask the Commissioner in writing to use another vessel and include proof. Approval can last up to 2 weeks, with one extra 2-week extension in the season. You cannot receive this approval in two straight years. The Commissioner may require you to fish and land those halibut separately from any catch under another license that lists the same vessel.
