Stay-away distances in abuse orders

Beginning January 1, 2026, Maine courts issuing a Protection from Abuse order can set a stay-away distance. The court can also bar the defendant from a specific place. The rule uses "knowingly," meaning the person must know they are within the banned distance to violate the order. This adds clearer, stronger protection for people under these orders.
