Farm and maple buildings exempt from code
The law exempts certain farm buildings from the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code. Buildings used to house livestock, store harvested crops, or grow crops do not have to meet the code. This does not cover cannabis cultivation regulated under Title 22 or 28-B; those buildings stay under the code. Buildings mainly used to process or store maple sap or syrup (maple sugarhouses) are also exempt.
Local sawmill lumber allowed in code
The law lets builders use materials from local sawmills under the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code. This includes nongraded lumber. It lowers the chance you must swap out materials to meet the code.
