Utilities must identify and contact medical device users

The law requires utilities to identify customers who need electricity to run essential medical equipment. You must have a documented medical need where a continued loss of power would likely harm your health. Utilities must keep outreach plans and contact you during emergencies and outages. Covered devices include infant apnea monitors, oxygen concentrators, ventilators or respirators, hemodialysis, IV feeding or infusion machines, aspirators, rocking bed or tank-type respirators, and similar equipment.

Stronger utility outage plans and worker safety

Utilities must add clear steps for sending field crews, supplies, and equipment during emergencies. Plans must include safety measures for employees and outside contractors doing emergency work. These rules make power restoration efforts more organized and safer. The law sets requirements but does not provide funding or set timelines.
