Reviews add finance, readiness, and consent

During the 2015-2016 school year, the Commissioner reviews social studies and includes personal finance proficiency. Beginning in 2016-2017, the Commissioner reviews and recommends objective measures to back up school certifications of postsecondary readiness. Beginning in 2019-2020, the review covers health, physical education, and wellness, including instruction on affirmative consent and the effects of alcohol and drugs on consent. Any changes still use the normal state approval process for learning results. This sets review topics and advice, not new funding or classroom mandates.

Seven-year cycle for school standards

The state now reviews K-12 academic standards every seven years. The new cycle begins in the 2025-2026 school year. The Commissioner and Department of Education run these reviews. This change shifts timing only. It does not set curriculum or add funding.
