First responders get stronger screening coverage

The law makes it easier for first responders to win coverage disputes over specialized risk screening. If your provider says the screening is medically appropriate and can help prevent disease, a denial creates a legal presumption against the insurer. First responders include government employees, occasional employees, or volunteers who provide or can provide fire, EMS, emergency communications, corrections, or police services. Specialized screening includes standard tests for job‑related cancers; blood panels like CBC, CMP, kidney and liver tests; mammograms, colonoscopies, and prostate exams at any age; certain inflammation markers; and vitamin and mineral level checks. This presumption applies in state lawsuits over these denials and to carrier decisions made on or after the law’s effective date.
