Public officers face firm deadlines

Public officers appointed or renewed under law, not judges, must meet firm qualification timelines. They must qualify within 30 days after being commissioned. They must file a qualification certificate with the Secretary of State within 45 days. If they miss both deadlines, the Secretary of State must suspend them until it is fixed. While suspended, the appointing authority may deem the appointment forfeited, declare the office vacant, and appoint a replacement.
