MaineCare pays for lactation help at home
The law requires MaineCare to pay for lactation services for children on MaineCare or CHIP. You can get help at home, in a hospital, clinic, office, or community site. Lactation services mean education or counseling about breastfeeding. Licensed health professionals or certified lactation consultants approved by the state can provide the visit, within their scope of practice.
Federal approval and funding to run MaineCare lactation coverage
The Department must apply to federal Medicaid for a state plan change that allows hospital and in‑home lactation services by consultants certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners to be reimbursed. The Department must write routine technical rules to carry this out and update them once federal approval is granted. For 2026-27, the law provides $12,257 from the General Fund, $19,942 in federal expenditures, and $546 in federal block grant funds to pay providers for in‑home services. It also gives one‑time funds of $91,993 (General Fund) and $178,901 (federal) for technology and to build the rate and payment model.
