Police notice to hospitalized patients of restricted status
The law lets law enforcement ask a hospital to meet a patient to tell them they are a restricted person under state law. The hospital must give officers a chance to deliver the notice at a time the hospital decides is clinically appropriate, considering the patient’s condition. To make this happen, the hospital may confirm that the person is a patient, even without the person’s consent or usual hospital privacy rules. This access and disclosure are only for giving the restricted-person notice.
