Road signs guide people to public defibrillators

Minnesota locations and businesses with outdoor public-access defibrillators can request directional road signs. Their devices must meet state registration and inspection rules. The road authority must place signs on roads it oversees within 60 days of a request. When practical, signs go 200–300 feet before an intersection or 800–1,600 feet before an interchange. Participants pay all installation, maintenance, and removal costs. They must keep devices recognizable, easy to reach, and clearly marked on the premises. They must immediately report removed or nonworking devices so authorities remove signs as soon as practical. By September 1, 2025, Minnesota’s transportation commissioner must develop standard signs with the universal defibrillator symbol. The commissioner must consult interested groups about placement, reliable emergency access, and limiting sign clutter. The commissioner can revise the state traffic sign manual; the temporary standard-setting section expires when relevant manual changes are adopted. The commissioner must notify the state’s Revisor of Statutes when that section expires. Both sections take effect the day after final enactment.
