Drivers must stop near flashing bus lights

Drivers approaching a stopped school bus with flashing red lights must stop at least 20 feet away, even without an extended stop arm. This applies on streets and highways, and at other locations marked with required signs. Drivers must wait until the stop arm is retracted and the red lights stop flashing. Flashing amber lights warn that red lights are coming; traffic must not enter the 20-foot space.

School transportation providers need federal tracking numbers

People, school districts, and operators providing school transportation in a school bus must apply for a U.S. Department of Transportation number. The number is used to track required school bus inspections. The requirement applies to transportation providers, not households.

School buses face updated safety kit rules

School transportation vehicles from model year 2027 onward must carry first aid kits meeting current national school transportation standards. Other vehicles may carry that kit or the minimum ten-unit kit listed in Minnesota rules. Beginning January 1, 2030, all type III vehicles must carry the national-standard kit. Type III vehicles have no more than ten seats, including the driver, and a manufacturer-rated loaded weight of 10,000 pounds or less. School buses must also carry a body fluids cleanup kit in a removable, moisture- and dust-proof container. The container must be marked to identify the kit and mounted in an accessible place in the driver's compartment.

School bus training gets clearer operating rules

Vehicles used to teach school or district employees to operate them now count as school buses. This also covers training for people working under an agreement with a school or district. Licensed commercial driver training schools get an exception to restrictions on operating buses not used as school buses. On public streets and highways, those training buses cannot use the stop arm or the specified warning-light systems.
