Farm equipment gets 35-mph speed limit

Minnesota raises the farm equipment speed limit from 30 to 35 miles per hour for driving or towing. Slow-moving vehicle emblem rules now cover equipment designed to travel at up to 35 miles per hour. The emblem must be visible from at least 600 feet behind the vehicle. Exceptions remain for actual construction zones and for displaying an emblem on equipment behind a towing power unit. Empty, non-self-propelled farm equipment can still be towed at lawful speeds above 35 without removing its emblem. Farm equipment towed by a motor vehicle at 35 or below is exempt from tail-lamp requirements only with an emblem and compliance with Minnesota Statutes section 169.55, subdivision 2(a)(4). The law also allows garbage and debris loads to travel uncovered below 35 miles per hour, but not on interstate highways. No material may escape, and drivers must immediately retrieve escaped material when safe.
