Joplin voters can raise hotel guest taxes

The law lets Joplin raise its hotel and motel guest tax only with city voter approval. This authority covers cities with more than 51,000 but fewer than 58,000 people that span multiple counties. The city must already collect the tax under this section when the section takes effect. The total rate cannot exceed 6% of the room charge per occupied room per night. The increase is added to room charges and listed separately from other charges and taxes. Money from the increase must only build and maintain new projects that promote tourism in the city.
