Mississippi bans foods from cultured animal cells

Beginning July 1, 2025, Mississippi bans making, selling, holding for sale, offering for sale, or distributing food produced from cultured animal cells. Violations are misdemeanors carrying up to a $500 fine, three months in county jail, or both. The Agriculture Commissioner may suspend or revoke a retail food establishment's license for a violation. The Health Department may suspend or revoke its permit after an owner or employee is convicted of a related violation. Both departments can adopt rules to carry out the ban.

Stricter meat labels for food sellers

Beginning July 1, 2025, foods containing cultured animal tissue, plant-based foods, and insect-based foods cannot be labeled as meat or meat food products. Meat labels must meet Mississippi inspected-and-passed labeling standards and cannot use false or misleading wording or formats. The Agriculture Commissioner can set label type styles and sizes, product identity and composition standards, and package-fill standards. The commissioner consults the U.S. Agriculture Secretary to keep product standards consistent with federal standards and can order misleading labels changed. Affected parties can request a hearing and appeal a final decision to chancery court within 30 days; the court can uphold, change, or overturn it.
