Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 1 costs, 2 mixed.

Candidates face new petition filing dates

Effective July 1, 2025, covered independent and special-election candidates cannot file petitions before the date set in Section 23-15-299. This replaces the January 1 filing start for offices listed in Section 23-15-359(1)(a) through (e). Petitions remain due by the same date, or applicable business day, as the candidate-fee deadline.

Levee commissioner primaries set for March

Effective July 1, 2025, Yazoo-Mississippi Delta Levee District party primaries fall on March’s second Tuesday. Counties or county parts represented by levee commissioners choose their nominees. In years with a congressional preference primary, candidates must qualify by 5:00 p.m. 75 days before that primary. A deadline on a weekend or legal holiday moves to 5:00 p.m. the next business day. The law replaces the old nomination-date rule.

Mississippi congressional primaries move to March

Effective July 1, 2025, Mississippi moves U.S. House primaries from June’s first Tuesday to March’s second Tuesday in non-presidential years. Any needed runoff follows four weeks later. All congressional districts hold their primaries on the same day. Presidential-year primaries keep the separate schedule under Section 23-15-1081. U.S. Senate nominees are chosen at the congressional primary immediately before the general election for that seat.
