Beginning July 1, 2025, transportation work participants must direct 25% of wages to court-ordered dependent support, fines, restitution, or costs. These costs include driver's-license fines and fees; once qualifying debts are cleared, or none exist, that share goes to savings. Another 50% must be saved until parole or release, while 10% is available for personal expenses. Up to 15% may pay facility expenses, including transportation. Any funds left after required deductions go into the participant's account for payment at release.
Beginning July 1, 2025, Mississippi's corrections department can establish paid inmate work programs in transportation department districts. The corrections department must set program rules, including who qualifies. Workers must earn at least the prevailing wage for the job and no less than the federal minimum wage. Participants must keep an account at a local financial institution. They must also give a pay stub to the corrections commissioner or a designee.
Beginning July 1, 2025, people sentenced to jail can request work release, including those serving felony sentences in jail. The sheriff decides who gets admitted. Anyone with more than one year left on their sentence cannot participate. The sheriff may also approve education or rehabilitation programs.
