Beginning July 1, 2025, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources can lease up to 80% of available permitted oyster areas. Leased areas are reserved for leaseholders; unleased permitted areas remain open to the public. The department can choose applicants without oyster-growing experience if they show financial stability. This option applies only when no experienced applicant has requested the area. Current oyster-leasing rules also apply to leases made before April 17, 2023, which the department must revise as needed.
