Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Task force members receive expense payments

Task force members receive a daily payment for each day spent on task force business. Nonlegislative members receive reimbursement for official travel expenses, while legislative members receive the legislative expense allowance. Existing state law sets the payment amounts; this act does not list dollar amounts. These payments apply during the task force's operation, which ends December 31, 2027.

Mississippi creates artificial intelligence task force

The law takes effect immediately and creates a seven-member voting task force with legislative co-chairs and optional nonvoting advisers. It reviews artificial intelligence laws, risks, privacy, security, fairness, liability, copyright, and consumer effects. It studies state agency uses and recommends best practices, oversight, testing options, funding, and draft state law changes. Its first meeting is required within 15 days after the law takes effect. Reports are due each December 1; recommendations need a majority vote of members present. Legislative staff and the legislative review committee support its work. It can accept gifts, grants, subsidies, and other funds, which must be reported and accounted for under state law. Extra contract staff are allowed only when subsidies are sufficient. The task force dissolves December 31, 2027; the law itself does not change household taxes, benefits, wages, or fees.

Public access to task force limited

The law exempts the task force's meetings, work, and findings from Mississippi's open-meetings and public-records requirements. This limits the public's legal right to access those activities and records. The task force dissolves December 31, 2027.
