Beginning July 1, 2025, official Mississippi court reporters can take freelance reporting work outside their appointed court’s jurisdiction. Reporters with no overdue court work and no required court attendance cannot be barred from freelance reporting. They must cover freelance expenses without reimbursement from the court, Administrative Office of Courts, or their government employer. They also cannot use government-owned equipment for freelance work. Circuit and chancery court reporters remain barred from practicing law in the court where they serve.
Beginning July 1, 2025, Mississippi circuit and chancery court reporters have higher annual salary caps based on experience. The caps are $59,400 for five years or less, $70,200 for over five but under ten, and $76,800 for ten or more. These caps do not guarantee raises, and increases cannot come from the State General Fund. Reporters can receive extra pay for court administrator duties in the same district. That pay requires a vote by the responsible judges and chancellors, consideration of hours worked, and Administrative Office of Courts approval. Counties fund salary, benefits, and approved extra pay through that office, based on each county’s share of scheduled district court weeks. For example, a county with five of 38 court weeks pays 5/38 of annual compensation. Counties send one-twelfth of their share by the 20th each month, or may pay the full year’s amount by January. After judicial approval and entry in court minutes, reporters receive 12 monthly payments on each month’s last working day. Only salary for services counts toward retirement; transcript fees, benefits, and reimbursements do not. Reporters receive no separate compensation for special or extended court terms. Counties reimburse official-duty mileage at the state employee rate after a mileage certificate is filed with the clerk and a judge approves payment.
