Code published in print and online

The law treats electronic releases as official publication. The code commissioner must publish key reference materials with the Montana Code Annotated. These include each section’s history, court case notes, editorial notes, cross-references, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and amendments, federal acts on authenticating laws, Montana’s constitutions, certain election ordinances, court rules, and full indexes and tables. This makes the code and its context easier to find and use.

Ongoing code updates and reorganization

After each session, the code commissioner prepares and annotates all general and permanent laws for publication. New sections get catchlines and code numbers. The commissioner keeps the code organized, updates it, and issues a yearly Official Report of changes, excluding spelling, punctuation, and capitalization fixes. The commissioner may reorganize the code title by title and meets with judges and the state bar to guide this work.

Pre-session report to fix laws

By November 1 before each regular session, the code commissioner sends a report to the legislative council. The report lists outdated or duplicate laws to repeal, and errors or unclear wording to fix. This recurring report helps keep Montana laws clear and current.
