Stronger oversight by interim committees

The law strengthens oversight by Montana’s interim legislative committees. Committees review agency rules, do assigned studies, and watch their agencies for problems and citizen concerns. If any member asks, they review advisory councils and required reports and can recommend keeping or ending them. Committees review agency-proposed bills, collect and share information for their work, and review statewide initiatives in their field. They vote to support or not support placing the initiative text on the ballot. The Legislative Services Division keeps accurate records of each committee.

More bipartisan drafts, new partisan rule

Each interim committee prepares bills and resolutions for the next session. A committee can request unlimited bill drafts when members from more than one party vote yes (bipartisan). It can request up to 5 drafts when only majority‑party members vote yes (partisan), up from 4. “Bipartisan” means support from more than one party. “Partisan” means only majority‑party members vote yes.
