License money dedicated to Montana wetlands

Beginning March 1, 2026, the department deposits application fees into its special state revenue account. Money from migratory, crane, and swan license sales goes into the same account. The department can spend this money only to protect, conserve, and develop wetlands in Montana.

New application and bonus point fees

Beginning March 1, 2026, the department charges a $5 application fee per species when a drawing is required. It also charges a special application fee for certain species: residents pay $10 per species; nonresidents pay $50. If you use the bonus point system, you pay an extra fee per species: residents $2; nonresidents $20.

New costs for migratory, crane, swan licenses

Beginning March 1, 2026, a migratory game bird license costs $10 for residents and $150 for nonresidents. A sandhill crane license costs $10 for residents and $75 for nonresidents, and you must also buy a migratory game bird license. A swan license costs $10 for residents and $75 for nonresidents, and you must also buy a migratory game bird license. Total cost for crane or swan hunting is $20 for residents and $225 for nonresidents.
