New parole board member qualifications

Beginning July 1, 2025, each board member must meet new qualifications. A member must have either a college degree in criminology, corrections, or a related social science; at least 5 years of work in corrections, the justice system, or criminal law; or a law degree. This limits who can be appointed to the board.

Parole board grows to six members

Beginning July 1, 2025, the Montana Board of Pardons and Parole increases from five to six members. The governor must appoint the sixth member within 60 days after that date, and the Senate must confirm. The initial appointee serves until January 1, 2029 and until a successor is appointed. After January 1, 2029, that seat carries a full 6-year term.
