Beginning July 1, 2025, releases found on or after January 1, 1984 can qualify for cleanup reimbursement from the state fund. Your tank must have met state or federal prevention rules when the release was found. Expenses paid before January 1, 1984 do not qualify. For an unknown underground tank, apply for a closure permit within 30 days and close it before the permit expires. The release must be accidental, and special rules still apply to heating-oil tanks and farm or home tanks of 1,100 gallons or less.
