Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Drivers of canceled or suspended cars pay

If you drive a vehicle with a canceled or suspended registration, you are liable for all tolls, fines, and damages from operating that vehicle. You must pay these costs.

Owners can bring drivers into lawsuits

If money is sought over use of your vehicle while its registration was canceled or suspended, you can bring the driver into the lawsuit. This helps owners shift costs to the person who drove.

Cancel or pause your vehicle registration

You can choose to cancel or suspend your Montana vehicle registration. If more than one adult is on the registration, everyone must agree. If you have the vehicle, you must remove its plates when you cancel. A canceled or suspended vehicle cannot be driven on public roads. The department sets the steps to start, record, and end a suspension or cancellation.
