Committee membership, pay, and funding

Beginning July 1, 2025, the committee has eight legislators: four from the House and four from the Senate. Two minority-party members serve from each chamber. The Speaker appoints House members, and the Senate Committee on Committees appoints Senate members. Appointments must be made within 30 days after July 1, 2025, and vacancies are filled the same way. Members elect a presiding officer and a vice presiding officer. Members get salary and expense reimbursement under state law 5-2-302. $23,000 from the general fund pays member reimbursements for the biennium ending June 30, 2027.

Campus rights probe at state universities

Beginning July 1, 2025, the law creates a temporary committee to investigate civil rights and censorship in the Montana University System. It takes on-the-record testimony from Montana students and makes findings and recommendations. It must send physical and electronic reports to the U.S. President; the Justice and Education Departments; leaders of Congress and Montana’s delegation; and Montana officials, including the Governor, the Department of Justice, the Office of Public Instruction, the House Speaker, and the Senate President. The committee may meet no more than three times and must finish its work by September 15, 2026. The Legislative Services Division provides staff support. The act ends December 31, 2026.
