More preventive dental care in schools, clinics

Licensed dental hygienists can give preventive care in public health clinics and approved school programs without a dentist on site. Services include cleaning deposits and stains, fluoride, sealants, root planing, polishing restorations, oral cancer checks, X-rays, charting, and limited prescriptions allowed by law. Hygienists must follow state board care guidelines and refer you to a dentist for needs beyond this scope. The state board can add more schools and public health programs where these services are offered.

New permits and limits for public dental care

Dental hygienists who work under public health supervision must hold a limited access permit. The state board sets the qualifications and application steps. Care under the permit is limited to patients in listed facilities or eligible students who cannot get regular dental care because of age, infirmity, disability, or money. In these settings, hygienists cannot give local anesthesia, do denture soft lines, or place temporary fillings; you must see a dentist for those.
