Retired teachers can work and keep pension

The law lets some TRS retirees work full time and keep pension checks. You must have 27 or more years of service, be off disability, and have received benefits for at least 2 months. Each year, the Superintendent must advertise the job and certify no qualified nonretired TRS member applied or accepted. TRS verifies your years of service and tells both sides. You are exempt from normal earnings and work limits, but you do not earn new service credit or rejoin active TRS. You can do this for up to five years in your life. A “year” means any part of July 1–June 30. These rules end June 30, 2031.

Employer payments and rules for rehired retirees

When the Superintendent hires a retiree under this program, the employer must pay monthly TRS contributions at the rates set in law. The TRS board can set rules to run the program. These authorities last until June 30, 2031.
